What are the activities?
We have two types of classes. Recess at the 'Y" and Recess on the Farm. For Recess at the 'Y,' activities vary but, typically, you'll find lightweight playground balls, big, floaty balloons, hula hoops, even jacks! Feeling creative? Try relaxing coloring books or build a Jenga tower. Instruction regarding the activity is available (there's a lead instructor and volunteers who are happy to help). Activities can accommodate 1-4 people where you can explore and make the activity your own. Feeling a little competitive? No problem. Feel free to challenge yourself. Feeling more relaxed? That works, too. Play at an activity and then try something new! If you really like one (and you probably will), hang out and play but please make sure others have a chance to play, too. After approximately 20 minutes of activity time, we transition to group games! Recess on the Farm has a different vibe and you can find great info under 'Join a class' and clicking Recess on the Farm.
What are the group games?
The games also vary but they are highly amusing while you play alongside others. For example, you could find a fun obstacle course - which may include stepping over a small hurdle (12"), bouncing a ball and then taking a shot at target practice (who cares if you hit it?), then tossing a high-five to your teammate to start them off. Or, you may find a more relaxed, cooperative game where you can work with others toward a common goal. Whichever the game, you'll find that the experience may just remind you of when you were a kid! Ever played 'Moonball?' You'll want to check it out! All the while, you can cheer for your teammates.. but you can cheer for others, too. We encourage support for all! Simple games that are inclusive is how we roll. Joy is our goal!
I'm not all that active. Can I still participate?
Great question! Of course. What's great about the games and activities is that they can be adapted to skill and comfort. Not an athlete? Not a problem. Interested in playing a game of jacks, learning how to hula hoop or maybe even build something (we can't give all our secrets away) and need a place to start? You'll be in the right place and we're here to help. If you bring a relaxed mindset, you'll have a great time! As with any activity, you are the best judge regarding your abilities and comfort so please proceed at your own safe pace.
What should I bring with me?
For Recess at the 'Y,' please wear sneakers or closed-toed shoes and clothes that are comfy and easy to move around in and a water bottle (if you forget, no worries, there's water on site). It's also important to know of any limitations/concerns you may have. Let us know and we'll be happy to work with you. For 'Recess on the Farm,' we recommend either sneakers or hiking shoes/boots, no open-toed shoes, please. More info and class descriptions can be found on 'join a class.'
